What does a Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake volunteer do?
Volunteers work with ReStore staff to keep the day to day operations of the store going. You may do anything from helping customers, to going out on the ReStore truck for donations, to building/fixing furniture, to cleaning the store, to warehouse management to pricing items!
Do I need to have retail or homebuilding experience?
No! Come willing to listen and learn from our staff; they are great teachers. You will learn a lot.
What is expected of me as a volunteer?
We expect you to:
- Fill out a waiver – if you were not provided an online link a couple weeks before your volunteer day, reach out to us or your group leader!
- IF YOU ARE FEELING SICK OR EXHIBITING SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19, PLEASE STAY HOME!!!
- Work with HFHC staff, homeowners, and other volunteers in a mature and responsible manner.
- Be physically able to perform tasks while under the direction of construction staff or volunteer supervisors.
- Come in the proper dress (see below).
- Commit to working your scheduled shift and arrive on time.
- Follow the instructions of the supervisor(s).
- Ask questions of the supervisor when you do not understand something.
- Adhere at all times to safety requirements as communicated by the site supervisor. Please immediately report concerns if you see something that looks unsafe.
- Be at least 14 years old to volunteer with a chaperone or 16 years old to volunteer as an individual.
What do I need to bring with me?
- We provide tools and supplies
- Your own work gloves (other safety equipment will be provided).
What should I wear?
- Sneakers or other close-toed shoes.
- Old clothes: Please wear comfortable clothes that you can move easily in and that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. (Plan ahead and throw an old towel or sheet in your car to protect your seats.)
- Work gloves (provided by you).
What happens if I get injured?
- HFHC Staff are certified in First Aid and CPR and can attend to minor cuts and scrapes. Please notify staff of any pre-existing conditions and of any necessary precautions, such as bee sting kit, inhaler etc. All injuries, no matter how minor, must be reported to your supervisor immediately.
- If a serious injury occurs, a staff person will assist you in getting emergency medical care.
Anything else I should know?
- Please arrive on time on your scheduled date. HFHC staff reserve the right to ask volunteers who arrive late to leave and reschedule for another workday.
- Have a lunch plan! If you haven’t been told by your group leader that lunch is being provided for you - or if you are coming out on your own - please bring a lunch with you!
- Leave all valuables at home or locked in your car trunk. We are not responsible for items lost or stolen during the day.
- IF YOU ARE FEELING SICK OR EXHIBITING ANY SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19 PLEASE STAY HOME.
- Volunteers should limit cell phone use (but definitely take pictures!). If you need to use your cell phone, please step to a corner to not get in the way.
